Kathleen Busch
Born in New York and raised in the suburbs of Washington, DC, Kathleen Busch has moved from Maryland to Virginia to North Carolina, and now back to Virginia. Combining a degree in Textiles and Clothing from the University of Maryland with a lifelong love of fabric and design, she has worked as a sportswear buyer, a teacher, a clothing and gift boutique manager, and a manager in college admissions. Along the way she co-founded an arts and crafts co-op in Richmond, Virginia, and was a member of Artwalk, an arts and crafts center in Boone, North Carolina.
While living in High Point, North Carolina, Kathleen worked in the twice yearly International Home Furnishings Market shows as well as the Showtime fabric shows. With access to high end industry samples, she created one of a kind custom pillows and handbags.
Yarns also provided material for creativity, and Kathleen has explored the many possibilities of felted wools. Along with several styles of handbags, she created a line of chillkeepers, wine bottle holders that function as both gift bag and insulator to keep chilled wine cool.
Kathleen and her husband, Glenn, lived in Bedford in the 1970s. At retirement they relocated to Lynchburg and are delighted to be back in beautiful Southwestern Virginia. With the vibrant arts community in Lynchburg, new inspirations and opportunity lead to fulfilling a lifelong ambition to create with paint.
Kathleen has studied with Rodney Laughon, Rosalie Day White, Kenneth Weinfurtner, and Christine Rooney, working in both oils and pastels. She also attended a weeklong summer workshop with Andras Bality at Nimrod Hall. As an active member of both the Lynchburg Art Club and the Seven Hills Art Club, she has shown work in club galleries as well as Poplar Forest and The Bower Center for the Arts. She has participated in the Lynchburg Art Festival at EC Glass High School, and in 2014 her work was chosen for placement on the judge’s fence. Three of her paintings were selected for the Lynchburg Art Club juried show “Connections” in April 2014. She was the featured artist at Changes Inc. gallery in October 2014.
While Kathleen’s work often features landscapes, she also enjoys still life, portraits, and city scenes. Since her husband is a dedicated fly fisherman, river scenes are a favorite subject. She strives to capture reality while emphasizing the beauty of light within the composition.
